Rule 15 - Crossing Situation
Plain English for Cadets
If two ships cross paths and there’s a risk of collision:
-
The ship that sees the other ship on its starboard side is the Give-Way Vessel.
-
The Give-Way Vessel must act early — usually by turning to starboard.
-
Avoid passing ahead of the stand-on ship.
-
The ship with the other on her port side is the Stand-On Vessel — keep your course and speed, but be ready to act if the give-way vessel fails to.
Key Bridge Advice for Cadets
-
Ship on Starboard = Stand On. If the other vessel is to starboard, you give way.
-
Act Early and Boldly. Small alterations cause confusion.
-
Starboard Turn is Best. Don’t cross ahead.
-
Keep Checking Risk. Use radar, visual bearings, and ARPA if fitted.
-
Call the Master Early. If unsure or action looks late, call the Captain.
