Deck Cadet One (DCOne) was founded with a simple but important goal: to make life easier for deck cadets by providing clear, accessible, and reliable resources to learn, revise, and share knowledge during their cadetship journey.

We, Andrew Lindley, Founder and James Spencer, Senior Editor, began our cadetships together in September 2023 as CMNT cadets at Fleetwood. Having trained side by side—sailing together on multiple ships and living together during our time at college—we’ve experienced the highs and lows (what you now have to call "challenges") of a cadetship. That shared journey has given us a clear understanding of just how difficult it can be to access free and useful revision material outside of college systems. While institutional resources are valuable, navigating multiple platforms—OneDrive, Canvas, shared drives—can be time-consuming and overwhelming, especially when you need quick clarification or a straightforward explanation.

DCOne was born out of that shared need: a central, cadet-focused space where knowledge is not only available but also easy to use and share.

Together, we’ve trained on a variety of vessel types—from ferries to cruise ships to LNG carriers—each with its own steep learning curve. Every transition, whether between ship types or between sea and college phases, brought unique challenges. Our experiences showed us that cadets benefit most when they have practical, peer-led resources to bridge those gaps. DCOne is designed to do exactly that: supporting cadets in building confidence and competence, no matter where they are in their training.

Meet the DCOne team
